山东黄河岸边的麦香村，随着新中国的成立，以牛大胆为首的贫农都分到了土地，而从北平归来的地主儿子马仁礼则一夜之间一无所有。牛大胆和马仁礼一个胆大，一个有文化，既是冤家，又是伙伴，在他们的带领下，麦香村村民用勤劳和智慧战胜了天灾，实现了粮食的大丰收。以狗儿为代表的麦香村新一代农民不仅把乡镇企业办得如火如荼，还带领村民到俄罗斯租地种地，真正实现了农民的发家致富。2006年《农业税条例》废止，农业税全面取消，农民获得了进一步的解放和自由。牛大胆看着麦香村绿油油的田地，眼里泛起泪光，心中充满希望。
