　　明熹宗朱由校年少即位，酷爱木工、漆匠之艺，视朝政为畏途，使得太监魏忠贤得以逐步代理政务。
　　魏忠贤为了讨好皇帝，从三万童男中，挑出小木匠巴大家当熹宗皇帝的玩伴。皇帝玩伴理当是个太监，巴大家却阴错阳差的三番两次逃过净身手术。他和皇帝平起平坐惯了，有时忘了我，也跟皇帝称兄道弟起来，皇帝玩得尽兴便没事，要是心情不好，“兄弟”就成了出气筒。
　　巴大家的处世哲学是：混一天算一天，多占点小便宜，偶而吃点亏，一定得讨回，一旦对方来头大，那就君子报仇，三年不晚。
　　这样的巴大家，在东林党、阉党、与白莲教暗地教劲的过程中，因为他与皇帝的亲密关系，竟成了各方人马争相拉拢的对象。只不过，倒向这头，就会得罪那头，既是左右逢源，又是动辄得咎。他满心想的只是如何占便宜、混日子，却老被误以为是争权夺利。他越想走避上层的勾心斗角，却越身不由己的被卷入政争旋涡。
　　只有宫中的内书堂助教袁小玉和张倩，才稍稍了解巴大家。三个人之间发生了微妙的三角恋情，然而，随著时局演变，袁小玉成了白莲教乱党余孽，张倩成了乱党之後，让个巴大家的恋情莫名其妙的就轰轰烈烈起来。爱人既被打成“乱臣贼子”，他不想当烈士也不成了。
　　魏忠贤眼中容不下一粒沙子，他和皇帝的乳母客氏一直揽权，藉消灭异己来坐大自己。杀政敌，掌东厂，灭白莲教，迫害东林党，权势如日中天，他的党羽则行可改名，坐可认贼作父，倍极阿谀。魏忠贤越来越将巴大家视为眼中钉，必去之而後快。
　　巴大家成了通缉要犯，四处亡命，在泗洲目睹了白莲教的灭亡，在无锡见证了东林党人的受害，然而，绕了一圈回京师後，造化弄人，巴大家竟又成为皇帝的救命恩人，以及魏忠贤的政敌太监王体乾的拉拢对象。
　　熹宗皇帝驾崩後，新皇帝思宗小心翼翼的对魏忠贤展开反击。魏忠贤权力被架空，树倒猴孙散，客氏被一群存心报复的宫女箈死，魏忠贤则自缢於充军途中。
　　思宗有意重用巴大家，巴大家见新皇帝身边又围起了一群新的牛鬼蛇神，哪敢沾那腥膻？便与袁小玉相偕离京，迳自当个快活的木匠去了。

The Vorlons are revealed to be the basis of legends about angels on various worlds, including Earth, and are the ancient enemies of the Shadows.
